An English manor exterior sets an expectation at the front door. The rooms behind it either continue the sentence or contradict it, and buyers notice the contradiction immediately even when they cannot name it.

The result reads European rather than themed: oak, plaster, stone, and wool doing the work that paint colors cannot.
In a large house, the practical problem is scale. Ceiling heights and room volumes that flatter a photograph will swallow furniture bought for an ordinary floor plan, and a rug two sizes too small can undo a room more thoroughly than any wall color. Getting proportion right is the least glamorous and most valuable part of the discipline.
The other is sequence. Millwork, lighting placement, and tile layout are architectural decisions dressed as decorative ones — they belong in the drawing set alongside the builder's work, not at the end. Designers brought in during construction shape the house; designers brought in after it shape the furniture.
