Architecture Term
Dormer
A roofed projection with a window, set into a sloping roof. Dormer rhythm and proportion strongly signal architectural style.
Architectural terms describe the massing, materials, and detail that define estate homes in the European vocabularies used throughout Skyecroft.
Dormer in Skyecroft practice
Dormers carry a great deal of a roof's character — and a great deal of its risk, since each one creates valleys and wall-to-roof joints that must shed water. In inspection, check dormer flashing, cheek walls, and window sills; in design, keep dormer width, spacing, and roof form consistent with the style of the house.
What to verify
- Flashing and sidewall condition at each dormer.
- Whether dormers are functional rooms or decorative.
- Style consistency if adding dormers in a renovation.
